Frequently Asked Questions

Does acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture needles are about the width of a single hair and their insertion is almost painless. Many people find acupuncture very relaxing and can fall asleep during treatment.

How does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture is based on the theory that Vital Energy (Qi pronounced chee) flows through the body in specific pathways like rivers. Whenever the flow is blocked or disrupted, pain and disease occur. Acupuncture works by restoring the proper flow of Qi.

Health insurance

Some health plans offer coverage of complementary and alternative medicine such as acupuncture. You need to determine what exactly your health insurance plan will cover:

  • Does it cover any complementary and alternative medicine treatments?
  • Is pre-authorization required?
  • What are the limitations in terms of coverage (types of medical conditions, type of practitioner, number of treatments, dollar or calendar limit, etc...)?
  • Does the health insurance plan only cover services that are deemed as medically necessary?

Your health insurer will be able to answer these questions for you.

Clinical Acupuncture Services does not directly bill insurance companies. However, we can provide a summary statement of treatment costs which you can use as a record for reimbursement.
